3 JULY 2022

Until the 2022 Ride for Isabel

Fundraising Progress

Raised: $15,129.60

Target: $30,000

Ride for Isabel was instigated by Mulgrave MP Curtis Pitt in 2010 after the loss of his and wife Kerry’s daughter Isabel, who was stillborn at 41 weeks. In 2021, Mr Pitt, together with the Tour of the Tropics committee, approached the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, with a view to the registered FNQ charity organising the ride. “The added benefit is that while we have supported SANDS for many years, it is important for all of us to support local, and we know the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation, support local babies at our Hospital.” Mr Pitt said.

RIDER INFO

To gain maximum enjoyment from participating in Ride for Isabel, riders should undertake some basic preparations in advance: get your body and your bike into shape!

Any reasonably fit person should be able to enjoy the ride, but cycling, like all other aerobic activities, uses specific muscles. While you may feel fit, because you walk, jog or run on a regular basis, if you suddenly start pedalling long distances you will rapidly – and painfully – discover muscles you did not realise you had!

You will need to gradually build up your general level of “cycling fitness” to enable you to comfortably cover the distance required each day.

The training program outlined below should help.* But remember, you don’t have to go overboard! Start with rides maintaining a steady pace and a high cadence. (About 80-100 rotations per minute is best.) It is actually more efficient to spin those legs, rather than push hard.

Just do what you can and try to maintain a regular cycling schedule.

*This program assumes you are starting from zero, cycling-wise. If you already cycle regularly, simply begin the program at the point where you feel most comfortable and then start to push beyond your comfort zone!

8328040-50Now you’re ready for Ride for Isabel

A comfortable mountain bike is suitable for this ride.

We recommend tubeless tyres fitted for the ride. This will reduce your chance of getting a puncture.

You should also remember to:

  • Take your bike to a bike shop for a service at least a month before the ride. (If you live in the Cairns region, don’t forget to book it in advance, as local shops are get busy in the lead up to the many cycling events in FNQ during the dry season.
  • Ensure your bike is in a comfortable and efficient riding position. If it is adjusted to suit your particular body size and shape, you will feel more relaxed and able to ride longer distances with less effort. Your local bike shop should be able to help set up your bike correctly.
  • Make sure you check your shoes, cleats and bike set up including handlebars, seat and tyres, before the ride. And don’t forget your brakes!

Well-serviced bicycle, helmet, lights, water bottle/s, sunscreen

The ride will be on 3 July, 2022. Entry fees vary depending on your chosen distance.

123km Gran Fondo – $160

60km Bessie Point Loop to Gordonvale – $85

50km Yarrabah Loop – $85

25km Bessie Point to Gordonvale – $45

Riders are encouraged to raise a minimum $100 funds per entry.

Registration will be open 1 hour prior to the event.

Because every cent donated, goes to its intended cause. We have deliberately kept registrations as low as possible to encourage you to fundraise. This does NOT have to come out of your pocket. Fundraising can be done in a multitude of ways and if you are out of ideas, drop us a line and we can help you. Every time you make a donation or someone donates to you, it is tax deductible and you or they will automatically receive a receipt when it is paid online via our website.

The ride is to encourage cyclists to give it a go, try something different.  It is a one day event and will be fun.

As long as you can handle the distance, you should be able to do the ride.

No, your bike does not need to be new but it does need to be in good mechanical order and recently serviced.

Hills!!! What hills? Yes there are a few but we like to call them undulations.

12 – 16 years with parental permission

Only if you want a coffee along the way.….
